Your Questions about Mercury Retrograde
Seeing as tomorrow marks the beginning of the latest Mercury Retrograde and this phase is a rather long one (considering its pre and post-phases), I was wondering if making important changes in one's life is a good idea.

Is staring a professional blog an appropriate course of action during this period? What about starting to self-analyze and make serious plans about the future? What worries me is that Mercury Retrograde brings confusion and false assumptions and this makes me feel quite uneasy about bringing important changes and commencing new beginnings in my life.

Answer:
Mercury retrograde tends to bring challenges to about 25% of the population at any given time, depending on their chart. Those with prominent Mercury, Gemini or Virgo tend to be affected more often at this time. The big question for you is whether you are addressing something that you have put on the back burner, or if you are starting something totally new.

If new, then consider doing due diligence at this time. Why are you doing the blog? what are you trying to achieve? Are you using the best  approaches, use of time and assistance? Do you need to ask more questions or get more information? Can you afford to wait, and still start writing?

Writing is good during Mercury retrograde, but putting things out and the assumptions etc. with respect to the goals and targets of the writing is where things show up. For most people, it can cause delays, misunderstandings and acting on incorrect information.

Take the time to stop and ask yourself what you are doing and why. Where are you coming from? Also, sit down and ask yourself where the worry is coming from? Are you creating this blog out of need or a want or is it an expression of your soul and spirit. If you take the time to be introspective to determine where you are coming from, and if you have done the due diligence, then you are less likely to run into difficulties. However, you still have to contend with the hurdles created with and by others.

If you have done the work and all seems a reasonable risk, then go ahead. But do do the work first.

Hi Elana
Much depends on where you are coming from. If starting a diet is redressing previous issues, then it is appropriate. Mercury retrograde is good for finishing outstanding things. Sometimes, starting a diet can be better linked to the lunar cycle, especially starting with the full moon, or at least in the period of time that the moon is waning, as you are trying to get rid of weight. It is currently waning.

All the best

Subject: Starting a diet during Mercury Retrograde's Pre-Shadow

Hello there,

I have found your website to be very informative on Mercury Retrograde and its various phases.

I was wondering whether Mercury Retrograde's Pre-Shadow and Mercury Retrograde and all the other phases are good for when one wishes to start a diet, or there far more ideal periods in which to begin such endeavors? Seeing as Mercury Retrograde is a frequent and prolonged occurrence during which many astrologists suggest starting new things isn't a good idea, I simply wanted to know if maybe starting a diet should wait.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Raechel

You have asked an interesting question, which I did not more fully address on my site:

Yes the same rules apply for each period. Check and re-check everything and be prepared for other people not to do so. Although the same rules apply for each period, the themes and focus of each period are different.

The first thing I would like to point out is that Mercury Retrograde does not increase the rate at which things tend to incur difficulties. It is more appropriate to say that the difficulties tend to show up with Mercury related themes. Other times also have the same frequency of issues, but tend to be along other themes.

The second thing I would point out is that most people do not feel Mercury Retrograde all that much. Yes there are communication and travel complications, but they do not personally feel it all that much. Mercury Retrograde more clearly affects about 25 to 30 percent of the population at any given cycle, and this relates to whether Mercury is a major ruler in their charts, or if Mercury in Retrograde significantly aspects important parts of the natal chart, especially by conjunction.

It is very important to discern your stance in dealing with Mercury Retrograde. It is important to determine where you are coming from, and to discriminate whether you are being pro-active, acting in the flow of the moment, or if you are re-acting and getting caught up in previous issues and fears. It is the latter that tends to exacerbate the cycle.

If you are coming out of fear, it is the fear and reactive-ness that is the problem, and it is what tends to set you up. Mercury Retrograde tends to occur when we over generalize: i.e. we make unfounded assumptions, or when we act out of tunnel vision: we ignore the larger picture.

I would not delay the job hunting process becasue of Mercury Retrograde. In fact, for you, the delay may be the retrograde cycle!

Instead I would advise you to be more watchful in terms of the communication, preparedness for the interview and the clarity with which you approach the process. Re-examine your assumptions. Although it is less favorable to sign contracts during the retrograde phase, most of the reason is that there is a tendency not to check all of the facts, or to prepare for the likelihood that others may not have done so, and that there may be surprises. Therefore, a more level headed or unemotionally attached attitude is better.

Often, when you are doing an activity, such as searching for a job during the retrograde cycle, it is best to truly contemplate how you ended up having to do so, you past experiences looking, your successes and lessons. The inner and contemplative work helps a lot.

In the simple situation, the pre shadow period tends to reflect the process of misunderstanding or not paying attention or assumptive behavior that sets up the retrograde itself. Often the post shadow reveals a deeper layer of the set-up, or brings the error or false assumption to the surface. Where a lot of people are involved or with respect to national or international events, this tends to be the case.

However, each person’s experience is unique, and a lot depends on how the retrograde interacts with their natal chart. For that reason, the actual challenges can occur at any of the periods, but often the themes do follow the phases, i.e., the tendency to contribute to the challenges in the pre phase, and for the post phase to reveal more of what happened.

Hi,

Thanks for your informative web page re: mercury retrograde.  I'm wondering if the same rules apply - as to the do's and dont's during mercury retrograde - when we're speaking of the pre and post shadow periods.  Mercury retrograde itself only lasts for a 3 week period, right?  Reason being - I'm currently unemployed and looking for work, and wondering whether or not to be applying for jobs during the pre and post shadow retrograde period.  And if I were invited to interview for, or even accept a job, would it be advisable or not to do that during this time?  Is it best to wait through the whole pre, direct, and post mercury retrograde period before even applying for jobs? (that's quite a lengthy period).  What do you suggest?

Thank you so much,

Raechel Morgan
